​​​California Health Education​

​The California Health Education Framework was adopted by the State Board of Education in May 2019. The primary purpose of the framework is to offer guidance to teachers of health education that will assist them in addressing significant changes to health instruction as reflected in the 2008 Health Education Standards, as well as more recent key initiatives and legislation.

The Budget Act of 2017 (AB 97) allocated funds to provide professional development and resources for the implementation of the new Health Education Framework. The CDE selected the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) to facilitate the California Health Education Framework (HEF) Rollout Project.

​Project Goals​

  • Support teachers of health education in advancing pedagogical practices and content knowledge.​
  • Build a Community of Practice where educators learn from each other and from content experts, share best practices, and collaborate to improve instructional outcomes.​

Project Activities​

  • Create professional learning opportunities supporting high quality Health Education.
  • Create new resources and tools that build the health related knowledge and skills of students.​

California Health Education Community of Practice 

The California Health Education Framework Rollout Project resulted in the formation of the California Health Education Community of Practice, which is comprised of county office of education leadership, district leadership, CDE consultants, subject matter experts, higher education partners, and others dedicated to supporting the implementation of high quality, skill-based health education in schools across the state. The California Health Education Com​munity of Practice meets quarterly to build capacity of leaders, share relevant health education updates and resources, and form workgroups as needed to create additional materials and supports​. It also serves as the Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) subcommittee​ for health education.
